What exactly does one do in an RTS game such as Company of Heroes? If it's not a First Person Shooter does the player actually do any shooting or is it all directing soldiers around? I am looking for a new game and I heard a lot of good things about this one.

It is mostly the commanding of soldiers, and if you're new to the genre, I would suggest Age of Empires 1, 2, or 3.
