I ask as i am not strictly speaking a fan of FPS, but i do enjoy Quantum of Solace (but may be biased as a bond fan) & played through Fallout 3 mostly in first person too - Do you think that i would get on with Far Cry 2?

Yes you would really enjoy Far Cry 2. It is the best FPS I have ever played. If you enjoyed Fallout 3 & Quantom of Solace, your going to love this game. It's got the best map editor on the planet, the online multiplayer is great, you can free-roam in the game, and it's got lots of side missions and a long storyline so it will keep you busy for a good 3 months or so. Buy it!
