i say an sd card with a micro chip, does the r4 have a hole for the micro chip as well?

Go to a near by Gamestop store and ask them these questions they will know for sure

You can't use the R4 for the DSi, only the DS. The R4 lets you play free Nintendo DS games and GBA games.

It functions to add memory. I read that it can unlock an iphone.

The R4i is called a Flash Cart, for the DS and DSi. It launches DS Homebrew and games.
It has a MicroSD card slot on the back of it, where it loads the firmware, and the homebrew/games from.
It looks like a normal game on the DSi menu, which you can launch to start up the R4i.

You will have to buy them online, because in most countries it is illegal to sell them in stores.
Also, before you buy, take a look at the alternatives, especially Acekard 2i.
