Starcraft, its expansion Starcraft: Brood Wars, and the upcoming Starcraft 2 are all real time strategy games by Blizzard Entrainment; the makers of World of Warcraft.

Starcraft is not an MMORPG, but a single/multiplier war simulator with a sci-fi theme. You control a whole army of units on a single map and attempt to destroy your opponents’ armies.

The original Starcraft is quite old now and headsets where not common when it came out. You will need separate software running to be able to use one, and that software does not come with the game.

You can play Starcraft by yourself, or have matches over Blizzard's Battle.net match making software, which is included. There is no cost for Battle.net; you just have to create a free account.

This means there are no game-cards for Starcraft. It is a buy-once play-always game.

Despite being over 10 years old, the game is still very popular, particularly in Asian countries where large cash-prize tournaments are still being regularly held. It can still be bought almost anywhere in the US where computer games are sold.

The planned sequel, Starcraft 2, is expected out this year. Many consider this the most anticipated game of 2009. I suspect MANY US game stores will have midnight sales when the game is released.

Check the wiki link below for more details, the article on Starcraft is very good.

No it is not an MMORPG it is a Real Time Strategy (RTS) game.
People don't typically voice chat with each other.
There is no monthly fee.
It's fun for some people, depends on the games you like.
No need for game cards, its not pay monthly.

Its not an RPG of any kind. It's similar to games like Age of Empires, you build a base, build units, defend it and go kill other bases.
