Historically the British would like to fight their naval battles like this, but for the French and Spanish they would avoid a ‘pell-mell’ battle at all costs. Reason being that British ships could fire at far greater rates and were far more aggressive; French and Spaniards liked to fire at British rigging and sail away, this they managed more often than not. Eventually the British improved their signaling and produced very aggressive admirals like Nelson who refined tactics to such a degree …

… that the French and Spanish couldn’t get away and slaughter usually followed. Nelson like to call it a battle of annihilation. The result was that no nation challenged Britain at sea for over 100 years following Trafalgar.
